Project Overview

Construction of a purpose-built medical training facility on a 15,750m2 campus for the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland – Medical University of Bahrain. The Core Building plan is that of an ellipse, constructed over 6 floors with balconies overlooking a canopy covered atrium. The scope included a 900m2 sports hall facility on two floors, various interior fit-out and MEP works, service buildings, road systems including 22,000m2 of parking facilities and associated external works.

The building structure consists of a cast in situ concrete frame and ground slab, hollow-core upper floor slabs with a thermally insulated roof, waterproofing, lightweight screed to slope, maintenance cradles and other technical installations. The external cladding comprises of precast concrete and an aluminium glazed curtain wall system. The atrium canopy is a high tensile tented structure on a structural steel framework sprung between anchor points on key structural elements of the buildings. The main entrance ramp features a water fountain with an obelisk clad in engraved granite.

The internal finishes include mineral, metal and gypsum-board suspended ceilings, feature stone and granite wall claddings, glazed floor and wall tiling, carpet and vinyl floor coverings, as well as plastered blockwork and drywall partitions, some with extensive decorative timber cladding.

The campus has a great number of teaching facilities which include 3 lecture theatres, 3 laboratories, 9 tutorial rooms and a large library with several group study rooms, as well as administrative and academic offices, a bookshop, a cafeteria and various common social areas. There are 6 lifts in the Core Building, of which 3 are ‘scenic’ lifts located around the central atrium area, and 1 lift in the Sports Building. Fit-out works and equipping of theatres, laboratories and other rooms, including containment and hard-cabling for the IT requirements, were part of GPZ’s scope.

Supply, installation, testing and commissioning of associated mechanical, electrical and building services were executed by GPZ’s MEP Division. These services included BMS, HVAC, plumbing, drainage, fire protection, smoke management system, fire alarm and detection system, LPG system, lighting fixtures and control system, UPS system installations etc.
