Project Overview

GPZ was appointed as the main civil contractor, under the EPC contractor SIDEM, for the expansion of the Desalination Plant at the Al Hidd Independent Water and Power Production (IWPP) project. To address the rapidly increasing demands for drinking water in Bahrain, SIDEM, the world leader in Multiple-Effect Distillation (MED), was awarded the contract to build an MED Plant which would increase the existing desalination plant capacity by 272,760m3/day.

GPZ scope of works comprised construction of 10 desalination units each with a capacity of 27,276m3/day. The works included civil and building facilities for auxiliary boilers, switchgear building, gas receiving station, black start generators, CO2 plant, limestone based re-mineralisation plant, electrochlorination plant, civils provisions for seawater pumps and filtration system, reject culvert, industrial buildings and ancillary equipment housings. At the time, Al Hidd became the largest desalination plant in the world using MED technology. Al Hidd now provides approximately 75% of the drinking water demand of Bahrain.
