Project Overview

Construction of a 5-storey five-star hotel, the first hotel to mark the skyline of the historic town of Muharraq, adjacent to Bahrain International Airport. With a total built-up area of 13,000m2, the hotel comprises of three wings radiating from a central atrium with a magnificent view of the sprawling lagoon and resort amenities. The project included a service block, a guard house and three 4-storey staff accommodation buildings providing both single and married quarters. External works consisted of a 600m2 free-form swimming pool with a feature infinity edge, a pool bar, extensive soft landscaping, lighting, floodlit tennis courts, roads, walkways, car parks and boundary walls.

The structure of the hotel, banquet hall and staff accommodation buildings comprises of reinforced concrete foundations and frame, precast concrete hollow-core slabs and rendered concrete block walls. A curved and sloping glazed aluminium façade forms the atrium. Externally the hotel is finished with Eleganstone, a water based acrylic resin incorporating natural granite chips, spray-applied in panel format to give the appearance of stone cladding.

The ground floor accommodates the entrance lobby and reception, a lobby restaurant, a formal restaurant with a show kitchen and wine tasting room, an entertainment bar with a stage for live band performances, a shopping arcade, business centre, gymnasiums and all the usual back-of-house facilities. The mezzanine level houses the hotel’s administration centre, meeting rooms and plant rooms. There are 106 deluxe guest rooms on the three upper floors, including 8 suites and 2 ambassador suites. Rooms and suites at the end of each wing enjoy the use of landscaped terraces. Guest room floors are served by three panoramic lifts overlooking the atrium.

High quality interior finishes in the public areas include carpet, timber boarding, marble and granite tiled floor coverings, wall finishes of timber or stainless steel cladding and handmade fibreglass curved panelling with internal illumination, and gypsum ceilings with decorative cornices. A significant feature of the restaurant is the large fibreglass inverted dome which was constructed in situ at floor level before being lifted into position against the ceiling. Public areas are completed with furniture, soft furnishings, window blinds, artificial plants and trees. Guest room fit-out works included carpeting, timber wall cladding and gypsum ceilings, plus furniture, curtains and free-standing lamps. The bathrooms are finished with ceramic tiles to floors and walls and marble vanity counters. Both public areas and guest rooms include decorative items, paintings and various objets d’art. All furniture was designed and manufactured in Bahrain.

The comprehensive mechanical, electrical and building services were undertaken by GPZ’s MEP Division and included heating, ventilation and air-conditioning, sprinklers, BMS, property management system, fire alarm system, public address, audio-visual systems including interactive televisions and satellite system, stage lighting and wireless internet facility. State-of-the-art equipment was installed in the atrium to project images onto the walls in a pre-programmed display. Services also included extensive kitchen and laundry equipment, LPG installation, plumbing, drainage and irrigation installations.
