Project Update: KHUH Oncology Centre

Construction works at the Oncology Centre at the King Hamad University Hospital (KHUH) in Bahrain are progressing sturdily with more than 7 million safe man-hours having been achieved to date. Priority areas are being handed over officially within the next few weeks and the whole facility will be handed over for full operational usage in early 2018.

The new Oncology Centre has been designed to the highest international standards of healthcare provisions bringing first- class cancer care and research facilities to Bahrain. It will be a 120-bed facility, covering 57,000 sqm including underground parking.

Incorporating the latest advances in technology, the Centre will combine research functions with comprehensive in- patient, out-patient, diagnostic and treatment facilities. Specifically, the Radiotherapy department will provide two linear accelerators, Brachytherapy and CT Simulators, while CT scan and MRI facilities will be offered in the Diagnostic & Imaging department. Additionally, the Centre will have a pharmacy, an ICU, 3 operating theatres, plus a 10-bed bone marrow Transplant Centre to treat both adults and children linked with King Faisal Scientific Research Centre in Saudi Arabia.

The development will also include a Central Utility Plant Unit which consists of medical gas, water storage facilities with an RO plant, chiller compound, generators, CHW pumps, boiler buildings and an oxygen V/E store. Externally the project consists of a network of roads with all utilities, various systems and soft landscaping works.

It is hoped that the Oncology Centre will play a leading role in the worldwide development of oncology radiation. Bahrain’s location at the center of the Arabian Gulf, neighbored by Saudi Arabia, will be critical to achieving national and internationally coordinated clinical trials to improve medical knowledge beyond borders and contribute to the worldwide fight against cancer.

The Oncology Centre has been designed by HASSELL in partnership with Bahrain-based Mazen Alumran Consulting Engineers (MACE) and team members Aecom, Baker Willis Smith and MJ Medical. The Client is Bahrain Defense Force.
